Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know” is a powerful song about the aftermath of a fiery romance that burns out (posted previously). Stars’ “Your Ex-Lover is Dead” is, in my opinion, the equivalent song for running into your ex after enough time has past. The emotion is still there, but it simmers rather than flares, and it’s more contemplative.
It also has a verse that so perfectly captures the sentiment and message of appreciating your past with your ex but recognizing the lack of a future. It’s learning from what you were:
There’s one thing I want to say, so I’ll be brave
You were what I wanted
I gave what I gave
I’m not sorry I met you
I’m not sorry it’s over
I’m not sorry there’s nothing to save
